The importance of early intervention

It is quite common to hear stories about routine annual exams saving a woman’s life. Even with excellent health, you may not be aware of any potential abnormalities or serious conditions present. If left untreated, these conditions may advance to the point that they need intensive treatment and could be life-threatening. A simple Pap smear or breast exam will help identify cancers or precancers in their early stages, giving you the best chance for successful treatment.

Early intervention will help you stay healthy and smiling for years to come!

What Should You Expect in an Annual Well Woman Exam?

Health History: If this is your first visit, this part can be longer than on return visits. We will take your complete medical and gynecological history. We will ask about your diet, exercise and smoking habits, any previous pregnancies, and if you are planning to become pregnant.

Physical exam: We will check your weight, height, and your vitals including your blood pressure We will examine the general health of your heart and lungs. Our goal is to get a general sense of your overall health.

Pelvic Exam: This simple, painless exam may take only a few minutes, but is extremely important for your health. We will check your reproductive organs, including your vulva, vagina, cervix, ovaries, and uterus. The goal of your pelvic exam is to check for and rule out abnormalities, ovarian cysts, infections, or certain cancers.

Pap Smear: During your exam, you may have a pap smear performed to rule out cervical cancer. It is a quick procedure involving taking a sample of your cervical cells and examining them at a laboratory to make sure that they are healthy and do not have precancerous or cancerous cells.

Breast Exam: Your breast exam is an essential component of your annual wellness exam. We will examine your breasts for any warning signs of breast cancer including dimpling, nipple inversion, discoloration, soreness, or lumps. We encourage you to keep up with your monthly self-exams at home. Early detection of breast cancer can be life-saving!

Urine Sample: We may ask you to provide a urine sample which we will use to check for your kidney health, various infections, and pregnancy.
